The quick answer
For a UK tradesperson, the useful question is not simply which service answers calls. It is what reaches you while you are on a job, how the allowance behaves in a busy month, and who handles the exception.
Clara appears first because its current UK offer combines unlimited answered calls, configurable trade intake, and verified native iOS and Android apps. Clara publishes this comparison and has a commercial interest in your decision. Treat the order as a documented shortlist, not an independent award.
| Service | Public UK offer checked August 27, 2026 | What reaches the owner | May fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clara | From £39.99/month, seven-day trial, unlimited answered calls | Call details and summaries in native mobile apps | You are an owner-operator or small team that wants predictable billing and mobile call visibility |
| TalkTrade | £49/month billed annually or £69/month monthly, seven-day trial | Structured summary by inbox or WhatsApp | You want a UK trade-specific missed-call workflow and WhatsApp delivery |
| Grip | From £49/month for 75 answered calls, three-day trial | Job details by text or WhatsApp | You prefer to pay by answered call and may later need team logins or calendar booking |
| Callio | Starter displayed at £19.99/month promotional, normally £29.99, for 60 minutes | Lead notifications by email, with details in its dashboard or app | You want a dedicated UK number and a minute-based entry plan |
| Moneypenny AI Voice Agent | Quote required | Transcripts by email or text, analytics, and optional human handoff | A larger or more complex business wants guided configuration and a path to real people |
Prices and allowances are not equivalent. Callio states that its prices exclude VAT. TalkTrade offers a lower monthly equivalent with annual billing. Grip bills by answered calls, while Clara advertises unlimited answered calls. Confirm the checkout total, VAT treatment, overages, and contract before buying.
Methodology
We reviewed official UK product and pricing pages that disclosed enough information to explain a distinct buying choice. A public price was not required when the service offered a materially different quote-led workflow, such as Moneypenny’s configured AI Voice Agent with human handoff.
Evaluation criteria
We evaluated:
- UK phone setup and whether you keep your existing number
- Pounds, VAT, annual billing, allowances, and overages
- What reaches an owner working away from a desk
- Trade-specific intake, transfer, and booking boundaries
- Trial or demo access
- Fit for a solo operator, small crew, or larger office
No competitor paid for inclusion. We did not turn calls, minutes, unlimited answering, and quote-led service into a false price league table.
How we ranked
Clara ranks first for this specific owner-on-the-tools question because the public UK plan has unlimited answered calls and native mobile access at the lowest standard monthly price in this shortlist. TalkTrade and Grip follow because their public products are explicitly built for UK trades and deliver job details through channels an owner can check between jobs. Callio offers a lower promotional entry price but uses a minute allowance and excludes VAT. Moneypenny comes later for a solo-trade comparison because it is quote-led, but its guided configuration and human handoff may be a better fit for a larger business.
This is Clara’s editorial judgment. It is not a claim that Clara has better call quality, uptime, or outcomes than the alternatives.
Clara - unlimited answering with native mobile apps
Clara’s UK pricing page lists the standard monthly Clara plan at £39.99 per month, with a seven-day trial and unlimited answered calls. You can forward an existing business number or use a Clara number. Clara asks the intake questions you configure and sends a written call summary to your phone.
Clara publishes native iOS and Android apps, so an owner can see who called and review the details without returning to a desktop. Caller conversations are supported in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, and French. The app interface is available in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Chinese.
May fit: an owner-operator or small field team that wants predictable call-answering cost and a mobile-first way to review caller details.
Watch for: Clara does not replace diagnosis, pricing judgment, emergency dispatch, or a person responsible for unusual calls. Test the intake and escalation rules before forwarding every call.

TalkTrade - trade-specific summaries by WhatsApp
TalkTrade’s official site lists £49 per month when billed annually or £69 per month when billed monthly, with a seven-day trial. It says the service asks for the job, postcode, urgency, and access details, then sends a structured summary to an inbox or WhatsApp. Customers keep calling the existing business number through call forwarding.
May fit: a solo trade or small crew that wants a UK-focused missed-call workflow and already uses WhatsApp to manage customer follow-up.
Watch for: the lower displayed monthly price requires annual payment. Confirm allowance, overage, VAT, supported networks, message delivery, and cancellation terms at checkout.

Grip - answered-call plans with text or WhatsApp delivery
Grip’s Starter plan is £49 per month for 75 answered calls. Pro is £99 for 175 calls and up to five team logins. Pro+ is £149 for 250 calls, calendar connections, bookings, and up to ten team logins. Every plan starts with a three-day trial, and the page lists a 50p overage per answered call.
Grip says missed-call details arrive by text or WhatsApp. Its site states that customers keep using the existing number and that call forwarding works across UK mobile networks, VoIP, and landlines.
May fit: a trades business that can forecast answered-call volume and wants job details sent through messaging rather than a separate mobile app.
Watch for: model a seasonal peak, not an average month. Confirm what counts as an answered call, whether spam exclusions apply in practice, and whether your calendar setup requires Pro+ or an add-on.
Callio - a minute-based plan with a dedicated UK number
Callio displays a promotional Starter price of £19.99 per month, normally £29.99, with 60 minutes. Its Professional and Business plans show 150 and 300 minutes. The official page says prices exclude VAT and includes one free demo call rather than a multi-day trial.
Callio provides a local or national UK number, custom greeting and script, lead capture, and email notifications. Its page also references access to lead details through a dashboard or app, but this review did not verify a public native App Store or Google Play listing.
May fit: a solo tradesperson with low, predictable talk time who is comfortable advertising or forwarding to a dedicated UK number.
Watch for: the promotional price may change. Confirm VAT, overage pricing, number ownership or portability, app access, and integrations before relying on the service.
Moneypenny AI Voice Agent - guided setup with optional human handoff
Moneypenny does not publish a standard AI Voice Agent price on the reviewed page. Its UK product describes a Solutions Architect-led setup, custom call flows and knowledge base, lead qualification, appointment scheduling, routing, FAQ handling, data collection, transcripts by email or text, and caller analytics. It also describes handoff to the customer’s people or Moneypenny’s people when required.
May fit: a larger trade business or multi-person office that values implementation help, analytics, and a human escalation path more than self-serve entry pricing.
Watch for: request a written quote that separates setup, usage, human answering, integrations, support, VAT, and contract terms. The public page does not establish a comparable monthly allowance.
Review Moneypenny’s AI Voice Agent.
Choose by the field workflow
Before choosing, map what happens after a caller hangs up:
- Does the owner see the caller and job details in a native app, WhatsApp, text, email, or a dashboard?
- Can more than one team member see and own the follow-up?
- What happens when a caller asks for a person or reports an urgent problem?
- Can you keep the existing number and turn forwarding on or off?
- What does a busy winter or storm week do to the bill?
A solo plumber checking calls between jobs has a different need from a five-person office routing calls across a team. The delivery channel matters as much as the voice.
A practical ten-call test
Run the same calls through each serious option before switching your main line:
- A new quote request with a postcode outside your area
- A repeat customer whose details are already known
- A caller asking for a price you have not approved
- An urgent job that needs your escalation rule
- A poor mobile connection or strong regional accent
- A supplier, spam call, and wrong number
- A caller who asks for a person
- An after-hours request
- A booking request with an unavailable time
- A vague caller who changes the job description
Check the transcript or summary, notification speed, routing, and what the system did when uncertain. Keep diagnosis, safety, pricing, and dispatch decisions with qualified people.
Testing status
Clara capabilities were checked against Clara’s current public pages. Competitor facts are vendor-reported. We did not independently test competitor calls, accent handling, latency, uptime, phone provisioning, integrations, support, or outcomes.
Limitations
Vendor pages can change. Promotional pricing is especially time-sensitive. Run representative calls, confirm UK terms and VAT, and get any important setup or service promise in writing.
